MUSIC OF KING FREDERICK II (THE GREAT) OF PRUSSIA - Besides being one of the greatest military geniuses of European History, King Frederick the Great of Prussia (1712-1786) was an accomplished musician and prolific composer of chamber music who, even while leading his army in the field against one of the mightiest coalitions ever assembled, was never out of reach of the flute he had learned to play as a boy. In all, 122 sonatas composed by him for flute and harpsichord survive, along with four flute concertos, four symphonies and a large number of smaller pieces. This album featuring two of his Symphonies for Chamber Orchestra (the G-Major and D-Major ), as well as two of his better known concertos for Flute, Strings and Continuo (the G-Major and C-Major), performed by the Kammerorchester "Carl Philip Emanuel Bach" under the direction of Hartmut Haenchen, is presented here as a piece of living history and a fascinating example of The Great King’s multi-faceted character. On hearing these compositions which once graced the rooms and terraces of Potsdam’s Sans Souci, the contemporary listener is indeed reminded that Preussens Gloria is not limited to the battlefield! CD ONLY: CP10064 DISCONTINUED
MUSIC FROM CHARLOTTENBURG CASTLE - The Castle of Charlottenburg, begun in 1695, was intended as a summer residence for Queen Sophie Charlotte (1668-1705), the wife of Frederick I (the first Hohenzollern "King in Prussia") and was originally called Schloß Lietzenberg, after the hamlet where it was situated a mere ten kilometers away from what were then the western outskirts of Berlin. The musically inclined Queen of Prussia, who had achieved recognition as a harpsichordist in her own right before the demanding audiences of Paris and Versailles, was above all a devotee of the Italianate baroque style of music then prevalent in the salons and courts of Europe, and accordingly attracted to her residence many of the leading composers, musicians and vocalists of the day - most of whom were, of course, Italians. This album, which nicely presents the culture of Prussia in a European context, features a collection of instrumental and vocal pieces by such figures as Arcangelo Corelli, Giovanni Bononcini, Giuseppe Torelli, Attilio Ariosti and Agostino Steffani, performed exactly as heard at the court of the Queen of Prussia nearly three centuries ago by the musicians and soloists of the Berliner Barock-Compagney. CD ONLY: CP10459 $DISCONTINUED
